Ultimately choosing to use her knowledge of color theory and the fundamentals of design to pursue a career in hairstyling, she spent many years in the top salons of Baltimore mentoring young stylists before coming on board at Laboratorie in 2010. She enjoys cutting precise, creative shapes and excels in bespoke color, from the avante-garde to believably natural. As Laboratorie's in-house Director of Education, Rebecca is constantly seeking out new education opportunities and dreaming up new ideas to inspire and promote the creative and technical growth of our team. She has polished her own technical skills under industry elite throughout the country and abroad, most recently completing an International Masters course at Sassoon London. Her dynamic approach to hairstyling has garnered Rebecca many accolades throughout her career including Baltimore City Paper's Best Hairstylist. She joined the team at Laboratorie in 2022, after 20 years in business. Rachel is most enthusiastic about cutting hair - short hair in particular - as it allows her to indulge her love for sculpture and fiber arts. She takes into careful consideration each client’s natural texture, density, and grain; the end result is a cut that requires minimal effort which simply falls into place. As a colorist, Rachel utilizes a similar approach, delivering results that are beautiful, yet low maintenance. Shades of red, rich brunettes, soft dimension, and gray coverage and gray-blending are her favorites, and she puts a great deal of thought, informed by her mastery of color theory, into every formula she concocts. Above all, she loves the transformative power of a good haircut and the meaningful relationships she has formed with her clients over the years. Outside of Laboratorie, Rachel spends her time at home in Ednor Gardens tending to her menagerie of house plants + pets…notably her dog Alfie, and bunnies Timmy and Malcolm. She loves learning languages and traveling the world. Calysta is also a skilled colorist specializing in all types of lived in color such as foilyage and balayage to create modern, on-trend color that is crafted to embrace the individuality of each of her clients. She has worked in top salons in the Annapolis area before bringing her talents to Baltimore where she looks to continue to advance her technical + artistic approach to hairdressing. After years as a client of Bethany’s + burnt out after nearly a decade of working in some of the most acclaimed restaurants in the area, Katie accepted a part time position as a salon assistant— a position that Bethany offered her on a whim while cutting Katie’s hair. In no time at all, it became clear that Katie had more than a casual interest in the detailed, creative + technical work she was watching the stylists perform. The part time position turned into a full time position. The full time position turned into an apprenticeship. The “apprentice” turned out to possess the kind of raw talent that her mentor + educator, Rebecca, has rarely seen in her years of teaching. Katie excels in creative color. She has a discerning eye for composition, creating color masterpieces that far surpass her years of experience. Katie has completed her training with Rebecca + graduated to working with clients independantly in 2020. While she is continuing to hone her technical skills + build her speed, appointments may run longer than typical, but the results are more than worth it! After a brief stopover in a modern Barber Shop specializing in short cuts, Risa made her way to Laboratorie to further her skills and train under Rebecca Dorsey, our Director of Education. Risa completed her intensive training curriculum at Laboratorie in December of 2017. She continues to pursue her craft through classes both in salon and with various industry leaders.
